Wings and Wildlife Festival Adds Wee Thump Joshua Tree
Field Trip and Free “Kids Fest”
Laughlin, Nev. – March 8, 2010 – Wings and Wildlife Festival has added a new field trip to the Wee Thump Joshua tree forest and a free event for children called “Kids Fest” during the March 10-15 festival hosted at Aquarius Casino Resort.
Renowned nature artist Sharon Schaefer will lead a field trip on Saturday, March 13 to the Wee Thump Joshua tree forest located approximately 50 miles from Laughlin. Estimated at more than 250 years old, the Joshua trees offer nesting cavities for unique species to build homes including the Western Bluebird, Hairy Woodpecker and the Ash-throated Flycatcher. The forest offers more habitat diversity than the Mohave Desert and is the only breeding population of Gilded Flickers in Nevada.
“Kids Fest,” a free event exclusively for children will be held Saturday, March 13 with activities and workshops for three age groups. “Nestlings,” children ages one to five, will go on an “I Spy” nature walk, learn to move like an animal and enjoy a wildlife puppet show and story. “Fledglings,” children ages six to 10, will go on a scavenger hunt, measure their wingspan and play wildlife games. “Juveniles,” ages 11 to 15, will take an introduction to birding hike, learn to use field guides and explore nature careers.
The festival is jam-packed with other educational and exciting field trips, offering ample opportunity to see the abundant wildlife along the Colorado River up close and personal. Guests can choose to take a water taxi tour of the Colorado River or kayak through the Laughlin Lagoon. Other trips include the Hualapai Mountain Park, Topock Marsh and Black Canyon.
Aquarius is offering room packages for Thursday through Saturday, March 11-13, or Friday through Sunday, March 12-14, for $219 plus tax and are available online at www.theaquarius.com. Room packages include two event registration passes. The festival is sponsored by the Southern Nevada Birding and Wildlife Trails Partnership, whose mission is to promote ecotourism in the rural areas of Southern Nevada.
