It seemed as though their paths were destined to intersect and then meld through the power of the written word. Michele Tell had moved to Las Vegas with her family when she was three years old. She attended college, worked at Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, and then moved back to Las Vegas in 1990 – first working at the Review-Journal as its PR director and then at MGM's PR department in 1993. She and writer James Woodrow met in 1996 – two years after he arrived in Las Vegas from Hawaii – in a creative writing course at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The couple decided to open a public relations firm, and Tell left the MGM in March of 1999, opening Preferred on April 1, 1999 – they married three months later. Their first client was the Venetian Resort~Hotel~Casino, with Preferred serving as the local PR company to help launch the resort's opening. Within 1-1/2 years it has grown from publicity and promotion to include full-service marketing; they now have 11 clients and five full-time staffers. "Las Vegas is an exciting place to be," says Tell. "It's rising to be one of the top hospitality industries in the nation and is recognizing the power of public relations." Woodrow adds that their success has come from a lot of hard work and dedication that has led to word of mouth referrals. "The only way to succeed is to ensure our clients' success," he says.
